The Science of Reading

Reading Is Taught, Not Caught

Decades of research are clear: most children don’t learn to read by being surrounded by books. They learn by being explicitly taught the relationship between letters and sounds, in a carefully sequenced order.

Our instruction follows this evidence. We teach phonics directly, build skills in a research-backed sequence, and use decodable texts that let children apply what they’ve actually been taught.

The result is reading that’s grounded, confident, and built to last.

How a Sequential Skill-Building Cycle Unfolds

Four clear stages, from first contact to final report. You’ll always know what comes next.

1

Free Screening

A relaxed, low-pressure first meeting. We get to know your child, observe their reading, and answer your questions. No commitment required.

2

Baseline Assessment

If you choose to enroll, we begin with a structured baseline assessment. Parents receive a clear written report showing exactly where their child is starting.

3

Skill-Building Instruction

Weekly 30-minute sessions targeting the skills your child needs most. Mid-program, we check in with parents to share what we’re seeing and what comes next.

4

Exit Report

At the end of the cycle, we reassess and share a final progress report. You’ll see measurable growth and a recommended next step.

What Happens in a Session

Every session follows a predictable structure that young learners thrive on.

Warm-Up & Review

A few minutes of review to reinforce previously taught skills and build automatic recall.

Targeted Skill Teaching

The heart of the session: explicit instruction on a specific skill, with guided practice until your child has it.

Apply & Practice

Application in real reading — decodable texts, sentences, and word work that lets your child use what they’ve just learned.

What Makes Us Different

You’ll Know It’s Working

The most common question parents ask other tutoring providers is: “How will I know it’s working?”

Our entire model is built to answer that question. From the very first session, you’ll have:

  • A documented baseline of your child’s skills
  • A clear list of skills targeted in each cycle
  • Mid-program parent check-in
  • An exit assessment showing measurable growth
  • Plain-language progress reports parents can actually read
  • A recommended next step at the end of every cycle
